As the holiday season approaches, York Simcoe Fieldhouse (YSFH) is once again stepping up to make a difference. The Newmarket-based facility has launched its second food drive of the year, partnering with the Food Bank of York Region (FBYR) to address the growing issue of food insecurity in the community. Running through Sunday, December 22nd, this initiative calls on players, families, and the wider community to lend a helping hand by donating non-perishable food items at YSFH’s convenient drop-off location.
A Crucial Time for Action
For many families across York Region, the holidays can be an incredibly stressful time. Rising costs of living, economic uncertainty, and other challenges mean that food insecurity is affecting more people than ever. Organizations like the FBYR work tirelessly to ensure that vulnerable families and individuals have access to nutritious meals year-round. However, their efforts rely heavily on community contributions, particularly during the colder months when the need for food assistance spikes.
“This is the season of giving, and there’s no better way to embody that spirit than by helping those who are struggling to put food on the table,” said Adam Stevenson, General Manager of York Simcoe Fieldhouse. “Every can, every box, every bag of donated food makes a tangible difference.”
What You Can Donate
The food drive welcomes a variety of non-perishable items, with a focus on the essentials that can sustain families through difficult times. Key items to consider donating include:
Canned Foods: Vegetables, fruits, meats, or hearty soups.
Dry Cereals: Simple, versatile, and kid-friendly breakfast staples.
Meal Packs: Easy-to-prepare boxed meals or instant noodles.
Rice & Pasta: Reliable pantry staples that can stretch into multiple meals.
Soups & Stews: Filling, warming options for cold days.

More Than Just a Food Drive
For YSFH, this initiative is about more than just filling boxes with food. It’s about fostering a sense of community and responsibility. Through this effort, the Fieldhouse hopes to instill in its players and families the importance of giving back.
“Baseball teaches us about teamwork, discipline, and perseverance,” added Stevenson. “But it’s also a platform to teach empathy and compassion. Supporting this food drive is a way to build character off the field while making a meaningful impact in our region.”
The collaboration with FBYR strengthens the community-focused values of YSFH. As one of the region’s leading organizations in tackling food insecurity, the Food Bank of York Region distributes over 2 million pounds of food annually to shelters, food pantries, and individuals in need. Supporting their work ensures that more people can face the holidays with hope and dignity.
The Bigger Picture
Food insecurity is a growing issue across Canada. Statistics show that 1 in 8 Canadian households face challenges in accessing adequate food, with children being disproportionately affected. For families relying on food banks, every donation counts, especially during the holidays when budgets are stretched even thinner.
By contributing to this food drive, you’re not only addressing immediate hunger needs but also sending a powerful message of solidarity to those in need.
